Training Employee Representatives
A group of employee representatives had been elected by their colleagues. Their role was to represent those work colleagues at an Employee Forum, which had been put together for the purpose of consulting over proposed redundancies. All employers must have consult collectively with employee representatives if where they proposed to dismiss 20 of more staff by way of redundancy.
Some employers have an Employee Forum in place for other purposes and so their representatives may be used to the principle of ‘consultation’. However if the workplace does not usually consult with staff, it is worth training staff. Members of management, who also attend the Forum, will also benefit from training.
The employee representatives were given some background to the purpose of the Forum, some training on how to undertake consultation and also some detail on how the rules around redundancy might affect them. This included information on ‘pooling’, selection criteria and also bumping
